The Church Parish History

Puliyoor St Thomas Mar Thoma Church upholds 125 years of glorious history and tradition and keep the flame of renaissance in Christianity still on.

In the late 19th century, our forefathers used to worship in Chengannur Old Syrian Church and thereafter in Edavankadu Church. By the Grace of the Almighty, a church was constructed in 1896 at Kulikkampalam, Puliyoor in a land of 40 cents owned and gifted by a Hindu Brother named Marunnur Kesava Karnavar. The first Holy Qurbana was served on Palm Sunday 1896 and therefore every year we celebrate the Parish Day on Palm Sunday to commemorate the occasion.

The Parish comprises of 335 houses and 1479 members in its roll, geographically scattered into 3 panchayats: Puliyoor, Ala and Cherianad, each having a Chapel for Sunday School and other evangelistic activities. The Parish also owns a Parsonage and a Community Hall suited for big occasions.

Puliyoor MTC has contributed for the purpose of spreading Evangelism and Humanism. 9 members of the church were ordained to priesthood of Marthoma Sabha. A School for the children of beggars in Narasapuram Mission Centre in Andra Pradesh is sponsored by the Parish.

We celebrated our Platinum Jubilee in 1971 and Centenary in 1996. Now, we the parishioners proudly celebrate the Quasquicentennial. The Jubilee was officially inaugurated by Very Rev. K M Mammen, Vicar General on 2019 April 14, Palm Sunday, in the remembrance of our first holy communion in 1896. Various programmes are scheduled to be conducted in the coming two years as part of the jubilee celebration and the valedictory function will be held on Saturday, February 6th 2021.

Now, Rev. Thomas Varghese is the Vicar of the Church and provides leadership for all the religious, physical and spiritual activities.
