Our Story

How it all began

History reveals that Puliyoor St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church epitomises the long cherished vision, efficiency, devotion of our forefathers of Ala, Cherianadu and Puliyoor, who all had to attend Holy Communion at Chengannur ‘Pazhaya Suriyani Pally’ and Edavankadu Church in the absence of their own parish to worship God Almighty.

By the grace of God, our forefathers united for a cause to build a Parish and under His Holy guidance, Puliyoor St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church was built. Mr. Oommen Philipose, accompanied by Mr. Cheriyan, approached Mr. Kesava Karnavar for acquiring forty cents of land for building a new parish. Without any monetary gain, Mr. Kesava Karnavar donated the land and registered the gift deed in the name of  Mr. Kochummen Ommen, Alinte Kannimel, Cherianad, Mr. Geevarghese, Thazhvanamalayil, Puliyoor and Mr. Mathunni, Keralavakkayil, Ala.

On 29th March 1896, on a Palm Sunday the first Holy Communion was celebrated by Joseph Kasseessa, Kottooreth, Thomas Kasseessa, Kottarathil and Koshy Kasseessa, Vaidhyan Veettil. On 9th January 1919, the renovated Holy Altar was dedicated by Most Rev. Titus II Metropolitan and Abraham Mar Thoma Suffragan Metropolitan.

On 26th February 2005, the reconstructed church building was consecrated by Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrisostom Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Irenius Suffragan Metropolitan, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Episcopa and Rev. Dr. K U Abraham Ramban.
